Interesting Facts About Custom USB Flash Drives

Anyone in their 20’s would not even know what a floppy disk drive was. Portable memory storage is all about USB flash drives in today’s society, so we thought it might be fun to list some facts that you may or may not already know.

  1. In 1999, the first USB drives were invented by Amir Ban, Dov Moran and Oron Ogdan who worked for an Israeli tech company called M-Systems.

  2. IBM and Trek Technology were the first to start selling USB drives in 2000.

  3. In 2005, Microsoft came up with the memory storage name of USB Flash Drives.

  4. Other names used are memory stick, key drive, thumb drive and jumpdrive.

  5. Currently, the highest capacity USB drive is a 3.0 that holds two terabytes of data. It is called the Data Travel Ultimate GT and was released by Kingston.

  6. Some of the most expensive USB flash drives globally are sold by a Swiss company called “La Maison Shawish”. They are famous for adding combinations of precious jewels, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, selling for over $40,000 each.

  7. Average life of a flash drive is ten years, depending on how it is used, but did you know you can extend its life if you store it in your refrigerator?

  8. The reverse is true for heat. At 100 degrees Celsius the drive is completely lost after 10 hours, but somehow, we’d imagine the user wouldn’t be alive either at these temperatures!

  9. Information on a flash drive can be viewed unlimited times and can be overwritten one million times – at least if you are lousy at typing like me, it allows you to correct all your mistakes.

  10. They are immune to electromagnetic interference.
